The practical consequence is that concrete, masonry and heavy stone always go in a dedicated 10 yard container, never in with general demolition debris, and never in a larger box. Understanding why saves you an expensive misunderstanding on delivery day.
The weight maths that decides everything
A truck carrying a loaded roll-off has a legal road weight it cannot exceed. Work backward from that limit and a 10 yard container filled level with concrete is already at or near it. A 20 or 30 yard filled with the same material would be far over - the truck physically could not lift and carry it legally.
So when a customer asks for a 30 yard for a driveway tear-out, the honest answer is no. Not because we are being difficult, but because a 30 yard full of broken concrete is an object that cannot be moved. It would sit on the property until someone unloaded enough of it by hand to make it legal, which defeats the entire purpose - and on a bench lot, a loaded truck already has grade to contend with before you add illegal weight.
The 10 yard is not a compromise on heavy material. It is the largest container that can legally leave your property once loaded with it.
Clean fill versus mixed debris
Here is where a little discipline saves money. Clean concrete, brick, block and unpainted stone can be recycled - crushed and reused as aggregate or fill - which is both cheaper to dispose of and better environmentally than sending it as mixed waste.
But "clean" is a strict standard. A clean-fill load is masonry and nothing else. The moment timber offcuts, protruding steel mesh, plastic, insulation or general rubbish get mixed in, the load is no longer clean fill. It becomes mixed debris - the $36-per-ton Mixed Trash rate at the county landfill - and the recycling route closes.
The saving is real enough to be worth the effort of keeping the concrete container pure. On any job producing a quantity of masonry, treat that container as masonry-only and put everything else elsewhere.
How it routes at the county landfill
The Salt Lake Valley Landfill charges by material. Concrete and asphalt kept clean and separate have their own per-ton rate; clean, dry soil is $12 per ton; but anything mixed or contaminated is charged at the $36-per-ton Mixed Trash rate.
For concrete that translates cleanly into two principles. First, a clean masonry load routes more economically than the same material mixed into general demolition waste. Second, keeping it clean also opens the recycling route rather than straight landfilling.
And, as with every load in 2026, it leaves tarped. Utah's secured-load law requires it, and the landfill now penalizes uncovered loads with a fee equal to the disposal price. Broken concrete does not blow out of a container the way shingles do, but the law applies to every load regardless, and we cover them all.
Preparing a load properly
A few habits make a concrete job go smoothly.
Break it to manageable sizes. Slabs that two people can lift load more efficiently and pack more densely than awkward oversized pieces.
Deal with the rebar. Steel cast inside concrete is normally fine. Mesh or bar sticking out of broken slabs is a problem, because it fouls the crushing equipment at a recycling facility. Cut protruding steel back flush where you can.
Keep it separate from the start. Decide at the outset which container is the masonry one and hold the line. Retrofitting separation after everything is mixed is far harder than maintaining it from the first load.
Ask about anything unusual. Painted or sealed concrete, or old material that might contain something other than aggregate, is worth a quick question before it goes in.
Stone, soil and bench excavation
Three related materials that behave the same way for weight. Stone from old foundations, retaining walls and patios qualifies as clean fill unmixed, and the tonnage in even a modest wall is usually far more than the owner expects.
Soil is deceptively heavy, and it must be dry to earn the low $12 rate - wet soil is charged at the mixed rate. On the graded bench and hillside lots that define this area, excavation and grading move a lot of dirt, so this matters more here than on the flat valley floor.
